So I've been busy lately and haven't been on the OLF for a while but noticed, upon my return, that I have "Walnut" under my name. Then i noticed various other species affixed to other persons names including Koa, cocobolo, and even the highly coveted Brazilian rosewood.

At first it was like, cool, I am a great wood with a strong history in many fields and highly regarded by much of the population as a fine wood. It didn't take long to see that these titles seem to be curiously associated with the number of posts a particular person has done. Then as these species move up the totem pole, they are less and less recognized by more and more people, until at the end you have the great BRW, which it seems only luthiers even know what it is.

It just reminded me of a lecture I got concerning grad school where my esteemed professor (actually the rock-shop tech) said:"you know, you go to school to learn more and more, about less and less, until finally you know everything about nothing, and nothing about anything else" I thought yes, that certainly seems to be the case.

Anyway, all this rambling is just to ask you higher eschelon wood specie folks how you do it? I want to be cocobolo! I want to be koa! Brazilian Rosewood! Do I need to do this 24/7 for the next week? For the next year?   

I am being facetious, of course. But seriously, my real question is this: how much time do you spend on the OLF: daily, weekly, monthly? I am interested because there is so much to learn, and even the little amount I have participated (although I feel like I'm going to graduate from Walnut here pretty soon) I have learned an enormous amount. Even if it is another obsession that, as my good friend says, I don't need right now.

The last thing I have to say is: thank you everyone, young/old, experienced/newbie, for sharing your thoughts and knowledge with me and everyone else here. This is a good place, and one my wife condones considering other options!

Geoff, as you can see, i'm the most experienced newbie here... as to the number of posts that is! How many hours per month do i spend here? honestly, i don't know but i would suspect that it is less than it was at the beginning, i just post fater than my shadow!

I'm glad that Lance and Brock decided to change the status names to woods because i'm far from being a grizzled veteran, i think that the numbers of guitars under the belt would be a better way to differentiate every names in the memberlist but since most of us are under the 10 guitars completed mark, it's good to hang out here with friends and have Koa or rosewood under our names instead of big yap in my case!

Oh BTW Geoff, i just visited your website again and WOW, your mandolins are top drawer, might bug you some when i start my batch of 3-4 mandos sometime soon!

I'd rather be Walnut or Koa than Cocobolo, which many folk disdain for its sensitizer issues. Brazilian Rosewood has too many political and moral questions associated with it, so there again, Walnut and Koa are the more desired species to be.

Don, be careful with the way you present yourself. If the public sees you
wanting to be koa, the response might not be very strong for your
blackwood. Nobody can see you enjoying or appreciating anything but
what you personally have to offer.

I think I might visit around 30 times a day. I come back pretty frequently.
I've come to realize how many people have really good things to say here,
and I'm anxious to read them and see their pics.

I love learning new things and I usually learn something here daily.

I bet I spend about 3 hours a day here, reading and posting. I've learned a ton here over the past (almost) 2 years and have made some great friends along the way.

The wood lable is an easy and fun way to indicate the number of posts of course. We all have an idea what that "label" should be, I for one should probably be iron wood because I'm so dense

When I'm at home I won't be on here so much. However, when I'm at work?... That's a different story.

Like today I'm working a night shift. 18:30 to 06:30 tomorrow morning. I'll probably spend 6-8 of those 12 hours on the forum... Sad, I know...

I see now. Several subtle clues to how you masters of gab do it! I've gotten it all wrong-- all else considered, time is my biggest detractor.

But, never-the-less, without a supreme highest tier of "ridiculously curly maple" i find little solace in title mobility. I'm fine slowly working my way up and vouching for said highest rung.
